While working for Brandblack, I was given the opportunity to work with NFL star, DeSean Jackson. I worked with DeSean for 3 NFL seasons, picking materials and creating all the graphics and illustrations for his cleats. His cleats, the “DJX” and “DJX11” were styled for all football events including Monday Night Football, home / away cleats and practice cleats while he played for the Washington Redskins and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
I created style boards for DeSean every season, giving him as many different options as I could, knowing he’d want to stand out every time his cleats touched the turf.
The DJX11 was DeSean’s second cleat from Brandblack, covered in synthetic leather, and an athletic mesh. DeSean didn’t like to switch up the materials on his cleat, as he loved the feel of the original materials, but loved to switch up the colors and graphics every day.
In 2017, DeSean became a free agent and ended up signing a 2 year deal with the Bucs. Brandblack kept the “DJX” and I rematerialized and recolored the cleat for his upcoming season with his new team in Tampa.
In 2016, DeSean Jackson and the Washington Redskins hosted Monday Night Football and we gave him his favorite color way of the season. DeSean wore them, risking fines for not following NFL uniform regulations. The cleats quickly made news.
I also made DeSean some special practice cleats for Monday Night Football that took him back to his Friday nights at Long Beach Poly.
The “DJX” was the first Brandblack football cleat after signing DeSean to a shoe deal in late 2015. I colored and materialized the 2016 DJX line for DeSean, giving him options for practices and games. All game cleats followed NFL rules, keeping with the Redskins team colors. This would be DeSeans last season playing for Washington.
